about

A traditional folk song about sailors coming home after a long sea voyage and having to leave their ship and all their recent experiences behind; sentiments that members of a hard-travelling, touring band can fully appreciate and relate to.

Gary sang the first verse, Andy the second, Hugh the third and all three sang the fourth in unison.

Although we had no idea during the recording what the album's eventual track running order would be, we were always unanimous that this track would end up as the album's finale, otherwise there was nowhere else on the album we felt it could go. Recorded totally live with doubled-up vocals, whistle and tambourine dubbed on later for extra effect.

We first performed 'Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her' at an acoustic duo show featuring Gary & Hugh (it was supposed to have been a trio gig with Glenn aswell but he had to pull out due to the bout of pleurisy he suffered). We tried it out unrehearsed on the spur of the moment and it worked better than we could have hoped. The next time was at the end of a full band show in Belgium, where we performed it totally acoustic in a huge hall after the electricity suddenly and unexpectedly cut out during the encores. Now it's found its way onto our new album!

Although we recorded a number of traditional songs and tunes on some of our early albums, this is the first one we have done for many years.

lyrics

LEAVE HER JOHNNY, LEAVE HER

I thought I heard the old man say
Leave her Johnny leave her
It's a long hard pull to the next payday
And it's time for us to leave her

Leave her Johnny leave her
Leave her Johnny leave her
Now the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her

Oh the skipper was bad but the mate was worse
Leave her Johnny leave her
He'd blow you down with a spike and a curse
And it's time for us to leave her

Leave her Johnny leave her
Leave her Johnny leave her
Now the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her

It's pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay
Leave her Johnny leave her
Pull you lubbers and then belay
And it's time for us to leave her

Leave her Johnny leave her
Leave her Johnny leave her
Now the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her

Leave her Johnny leave her
Leave her Johnny leave her
Now the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her

Leave her Johnny leave her
Leave her Johnny leave her
