about

Success Road is in the former mining community of Philadelphia, County Durham. I used to pass it on the bus on my way to Peterlee where I worked for 6 years as a Community Arts Worker in the 1980s. It looks like one of the most unsuccessful roads imaginable! Where do Councillors get their ideas from?!

(Keith Armstrong - from original liner notes)

lyrics

SUCCESS ROAD

On Success Road
You can strike it rich
On a fruit machine
At the flick of a switch

On Success Road
You can look for a job
In an empty factory
With the rest of the mob

On Success Road
There’s a pall of gloom
Appalling prospects
And a hint of doom

On Success Road
You’re free to vote
With no chances
And no overcoat

On Success Road
You can demonstrate
Minded by police
And in a Right State

On Success Road
There’s a horde of failure
Chilling statistics
And pop-star mania

On Success Road
You’re born to debt
On the crumbling pavement
And in the wet

On Success Road
You’ll never succeed
You’re on a loser
And you just can’t speed

On Success Road
There is no choice
But shout “Revolution!”
And you’ll lose your voice

On Success Road
You can strike it rich
On a fruit machine
At the flick of a switch
